Social Media, Guns, & The West Virginia Teachers Strike
Let be begin my saying this is probably the most random combination of topics but I began to have some revelations while sitting in class this week and this blog post is a visual representation of these thoughts:
So threes the things that have occurred to bring about this post:
1. I became enrolled in this Psychology of Social Media Honors Seminar
2. The Parkland Shooting occured
3. West Virginia teachers went on strike
1) So the first thing I would like to bring to light is the correlation between my presentation in class about the sloppiness of elected officials and the WV teachers strike. Previously my assigned topic dealt with the inaccuracy of presented statements and also gramatical errors in Trump's personal tweets from the POTUS twitter account. It just so happens that this very week I stumbled across an example from one of West Virginia's governor exhibiting the exact same behavior.
In the pictures below the viewer can see how Jim Justice exhibited incorrect subject/verb agreement in one of his tweets threatening the teachers on strike. Seeing how he is a popular political figure, the internet exploded with comments about this error. ( It also is quite hilarious that he is fighting against teachers and his inncorrect grammar proves a point for the need of teachers to teach out children how to conjugate subjects and verbs correctly).

2) The second thing I would like to bring to light connects good ole Jim Justice and the Parkland Shooting that occurred earlier this week. When entering a room filled with spectators, our dear governor thought it would be the funniest thing to reference the shooting. In the video included below Justice can be seen entering a school gymnasium of crowded of protestors saying "No one is going to shoot me are ya? you font have to promise, you don't have to promise"..... It baffles me that this man would joke like that in this sensitive time after the Parkland incident.

3) The third thing I would like to bring to light is the constant debates all over social media about arming educators with guns as a call to action after the recent school shooting incidents. My opinion in this matter is strictly neutral for the purposes of this blog but some valid points can be spread through these debates as well. If arming educators with weapons occurs then okay, and if it does not occur, okay to that as well, but educators need to be armed with more than guns. Arm them with all the school supplies that they already purchase out of their pockets, arm them with technology and computers to make these children the most advanced and technologically savvy, arm them with clothes and food that they already purchase to send home with their starving students. Arm them with a salary to keep them in West Virginia and arm these schools with teachers to fill the 700+ vacant positions West Virginia currently has.
4) Social media has proven to show me articles and videos and discussions and signs and posts to form all of these opinions but there is one thing that I feel needs to be said to tie this all together:
At the end of the day rather or not if it's a gunman in the hall, or a tornado outside the window, a flood seeping through the floors, or a bomb threat spoken over the intercom, these teachers are your child's lifeline both for an education and their safety in thrustful situations. Stop hating on teachers and give them the resources your child needs to learn , give teachers a reason to step back into that school after a disaster, give teachers validation for being committed to creating a better generation, give teachers ambition to take that vacant job so your child can graduate with the credits they need, give teachers what they are asking for because I promise its not nearly what they deserve.
